Mohanlal Viswanathan Nair (born 21 May 1960),[1] better known as Mohanlal, is an Indian actor, producer and occasional singer best known for his work in Malayalam films. Mohanlal made his acting debut in Thiranottam (1978), but the film got released only after 25 years due to censorship issues.[3] His first film to be released was Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980) in which he acted as the antagonist. His major commercial success of Rajavinte Makan (1986) which is widely considered as a cult classic in action movie genre.[4][5]

In 1991, he produced and acted in Bharatham which is interpreted as a modern-day adaptation of the Ramayana from Bharath's perspective. The film was a critical and commercial success, and got Mohanlal the National Film Award for Best Actor for that year.[6] His role in Bharatam was listed among 25 best acting performance of Indian cinema by Forbes on occasion of celebrating 100 years of Indian Cinema.[7] In 1999, he produced and acted in Vanaprastham, which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival (AFI Fest).[8] It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival and is considered to be one of Mohanlal's best performances.[9] Vanaprastham was screened retrospective, during the 2014 International Film Festival of India in the Celebrating Dance in Indian cinema section.[10]

In a career spanning over three decades, Mohanlal has acted in over 300 Malayalam films in various genres and few films in Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada which include works such as Iruvar (1997), Company (2002), Manamantha (2016), and Janatha Garage (2016).[11] Mohanlal has won four Indian National Film Awards – two Best Actor Awards, one Special Jury Award, and one Award for Best Film as producer; along with six Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actor and eight Filmfare Awards for Best Actor. In 2001, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour, for his contributions towards Indian cinema.[12] In 2009, he became the first and the only actor to receive the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army of India[13] and in 2010 he received an honorary doctorate from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kerala.[14] He was elected as the most popular Keralite in an online poll conducted by CNN-IBN in 2006 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Kerala's formation.

Pulimurugan (English: Leopard Murugan) is a 2016 Indian Malayalam-language action adventure film directed by Vysakh, starring Mohanlal in the titular role.[4] It is the first independent screenplay written by Udayakrishna of the Udayakrishna-Siby K. Thomas duo. The film is produced by Tomichan Mulakupadam through the production house, Mulakupadam Films. The score and soundtrack are composed by Gopi Sunder, while cinematography is handled by Shaji Kumar.

Peter Hein handles the fight choreography.[5] The film, which commenced production in July 2015 in Hanoi, Vietnam.[6] The film was released on 7 October 2016.

Aye Auto (Malayalam: ഏയ്‌ ഓട്ടോ) is a 1990 Malayalam romantic-musical film directed by Venu Nagavalli[2] and starring Mohanlal and Rekha in the lead roles.[3] The film showcases the life of auto drivers in the city of Calicut.
