31st January 2013, Kochi: The first phase of the SmartCity project will be completed in two years, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said on Thursday. The mega knowledge city to come up on 246 acres near Kakkanad is expected to generate one lakh jobs in the IT&ITeS sectors.Inaugurating a workshop at Nedumbassery to discuss the project masterplan, Chandy promised its promoter, Dubai-based Tecom Investments, all support to speed up the project."We have lost seven years and we don't want to waste a single minute more. Now, the project has cleared its last hurdle regarding the single SEZ status as well," he said, reminding that the state lagged behind in the initial race in information technology and it did not want to disappoint the second generation.Chandy said environmental clearance for the project could be obtained in 45 days if all the documents were proper. Issues related to the road and drawing power lines to the project site would also be sorted out on a war-footing.The government would accept any decision taken by the Tecom regarding the new CEO for the project. "There are some formalities regarding this," he added.Abdullatheef Al Mulla, the business development director of Dubai Holdings, the parent company of Tecom Investments, and who is in charge of the project, said work could start as soon as all the clearances were got.
